Navigation courses

Navigation is the key to unlocking the outdoors

and the door to your next adventure.

Knowing how to find your way using a compass or how to interpret the information shown on a map can give you the confidence to take that next step into unfamiliar terrain.

Our course locations and terrain are specifically matched to the appropriate terrains.

Courses aimed at extending your existing skills will be utilising the more challenging terrain found in the Peak District or the technical mountain terrain of the Lake District.

An introduction to Map & Compass

Come and spend a day with us - learn the basics or consolidate your existing skills and build on them. On this course, we will be in the type of landscape where footpaths work their way through fields, hedgerows, woodlands and undulating countryside. Learn how to not only understand the mechanics of how maps and compasses work together but also more importantly, how to start interpreting the landscape around you.

Some of the key subjects are:

  • Orientating the map, understanding features & symbols
  • Estimation of time & distance
  • Suitable route choice

Navigation - The Next Step

Heading away from busy well-marked paths can open up a world of adventure. The terrain is open and requires interpreting, paths are but small faint trails, and often you need to follow a direction in open ground.

On this 2 day course, we look at the strategies involved in navigating the sort of terrain in areas of upper moorland and lowland hills.

Key subjects on this course include:

  • Contours & how to read them
  • Grid references
  • Compasses and taking a bearing
  • Strategies such as "aiming off", using attack points, and using simple techniques to relocate your position

Natural Navigation

Linked to Bushcraft, Natural Navigation is using many of the signs and effects of nature and the environment, not only to establish a direction but also to interpret the landscape to make for an easier route on your journey.

This half-day course can provide an additional set of skills for those who have attended any of our standard navigation courses or our bushcraft courses. It may also be suited to those who have a broader interest in the countryside environment.
